Negative and Bloom Effects for Windows Movie Maker 6.0

Blaine's Bloom/Negative EffectsHere's a couple new effects for the Vista version of Movie Maker. The first two effects are called 'Bloom In' and 'Bloom Out'. They create a bright glare to come from lighter items in the video. If you use Bloom Out at the end of a clip, and Bloom In at the beginning of the next, you can get a cool transition, that you've probably seen a lot on TV. The other effect is a Negative effect which reverses all the color values. Preview a video of the Bloom and Negative effects

There are two installers depending on whether you are running WMM 6.0 on a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows. The installer will put the necessary files into, C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared.
Windows Movie Maker 6.0:
Blaine's Bloom and Negative Effects (32-bit)
Blaine's Bloom and Negative Effects (64-bit)
After installing, you'll have the new effects the next time you start up Movie Maker.

If you have any questions on these effects, feel free to post in the forum topic on the Bloom and Negative Effects

  1. Great Blaine! I love your work!
    1. It's free and not limited (10 days or so..)
    2. It's ALWAYS working (some xml's don't owk:(
    3. All effects are usefull and very good!

But I have a question about RehanTFX. If it expires, what happens. They say you can't use effects and translations?
And what about the Additional ShaderTFX Transitions/Effects, can they still be used?
MovieMakersKid new translation pakkage works with RehanTFX, will it be usefull if you can't pay for RehanTFX?
I hope you can explain this to me.
Please respond to mail me @ d600owner@live.nl

  2. Thanks for the comments. As for the expiration behavior of Rehan's Shader TFX, that would be better answered by Rehan. From my experience most things work after the expiration except for the things requiring images (gradient wipes, for example).

  4. That's already part of Rehan's ShaderTFX package. Check the following list of custom Vista Effects/Transitions/Titles for a link to ShaderTFX.

  6. I believe bluescreen works in the trial version of ShaderTFX... only gradient wipes and things that require images seem to require registration.

  9. Clever! Could you please make effects for Windows Movie Maker on Vista that involve a PNG overlapping a video?

    ReplyDelete
  10. PNG Overlays can already be done with Rehan's ShaderTFX package.

  11. IT'S NOT SHOWING ON TRASITIONS/EFFECTS and I CLICKED ON PICTURE THING {IT'S FOR ALL OF THE ONES YOU POSTED}

  12. Please provide more details... for example are you running a 64-bit version of Windows Vista? Are you on a non-English version of Windows? Did you restart Movie Maker before checking? What are the actual symptoms? Are you sure you are looking in 'Video Effects'?

  14. This is nice, but can you make the effects two diffent downloads?

    I don't want the "bloom"
All I want is the "Negitive"

  15. Truly what I've been looking for for quite awhile! Thanks for making these. The installers worked great (no effort on my part) and the effects are even better. :) Lovely. Thanks!

  16. Hello I just tried to install your effect and it wont work. I have windows vista home premium. Should this effect have an icon under the effects tab or what?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Are you on a 64-bit version of Vista, perhaps? Or are you using a 2.6 version of WMM?

  20. Dude you're amazing!!!

and thanks for sharing your work for all of us!

if you are able, please make this work for XP also. thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Blaine, your a genius! Thanks so much for all the hardwork you put into these effects, they really make my videos look more proffesional! Thanks so much! My personal favourites are bloom, fade and contrast!

Sorry, I know I may sound a bother, but could you perhaps create an effect that tints the colour of the image, I have seen it used in other movie makers such as Sony Vegas.

For example, you could create a red tinting effect which would make the whole clip or image tint red.

I understand if you do not have the time or this effect cannot be made, but it's just a suggestion :D

    Thanks again :)

  22. Dolley,

Try this post on the Windows Movie Maker forums.

Let me know if that does what you need.

  24. Hey Blaine!

I'm a huge fan of your work, you have major talent!

sadly, I'm a XP user, and would really appreciate if you could make your bloom, negative, contrast, and color fade effects use-able for XP users..

    it's probably alot of work..

    could you help me?

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'd like to, but the architecture is different. It's not a simple thing to do in XP, but the new use of the GPU in WMM 6.0 makes it possible.

    ReplyDelete
  26. is there anyway i can get it? like, from other websites, or something?

    ReplyDelete
  27. You can definitely find Negative, and I pointed you to a manual way to do the color fade as a transition in XP.

For the others, check The FX Archive. If it isn't there, there isn't a free version anywhere. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  28. that website helped alot!!!

    thanks so much!

one last question, i just got sony vegas pro 8.0, do they have the capabilities to do bloom, contrast, negative, and color fade?

  29. Hi Blaine,
Do your effects work in 64-bit Vista?

I have 64-bit Vista, and I downloaded the Bloom effects, but they didn't show up. I moved them from the x86 folder to the other folder, but they still didn't show.

    ReplyDelete
  30. baccab, you also need to copy the BlaineBloom.fx file from C:\Program Files (x86)\Movie Maker\Shared to C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thanks! They're all showing up and they look like they work. I really appreciate your work.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Great, and sorry about my prior misspelling of Beccab.

  33. Hi Blaine I have a question about the wonderful Bloom effect you created. In your video sample the Bloom Effect speed from one clip to the other is quite fast. When I use the bloom effect its seems very slow. How can I speed it up between two clips? Regards, David

    ReplyDelete
  34. David, the Bloom Effect acts on the length of the clip. If you want it just at the end, make a split (say 1 second before the end) and apply the Bloom Effect to that.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thanks Blaine for your help and kindness in producing these's effects... David

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thanks Blaine, your idea about using the split for the Bloom worked out great! David

  37. i add the installer but it doesn't work. is there any way to add is as xml or just fx?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I have a problem i am using a 64-bit Vista Windows Movie maker and I downloaded and installed this and TV Ratings but it doesn't show up in my effects or transitions, and yes i rebooted.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The 32-bit installer will put the files under the wrong folder. Move everything from C:\Program Files (x86)\Movie Maker\Shared to C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hi Blaine :)

I had previously been using these effects for years on my vista 32-bit machine (and they were fantastic!) but I have just switched to windows 7 64-bit and not having these effects is driving me mad. I can't seem to edit without them!

I get the whole black screen thing when i try to run an effect. I have an unexpired, unregistered 64-bit version of ShaderTFX and I have also been transferring the DLL, FX and XML files for your effects from the Program files x86 folder to Program files... and no luck. It's baffling me, so i wonder if you could help...?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Make sure the .fx file is in the C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared folder. Make sure the .dll and .xml files are in the C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX folder. The effects don't use ShaderTFX at all, so that shouldn't matter.

  42. Worked an absolute treat. Thank you so much! Life saver :)

  43. I have a 64-Bit Windows Movie Maker 6.0(Vista) on Windows 7. The bloom and negative effects do work on that, right? I installed the windows installer package "BlaineBloom" and ran it.
A small window said "Please wait while Windows configures Blaine's Bloom/Negative Effects" and then closed. I had a similar problem when installing WMM 6.0, and you said that I should reinstall System Restore or temporarily turn it off. It solved the problem, and I tried it for these effects, too. It didn't work.
I looked in the C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX folder and I found 2 files, and one other file in the Shared. How can I get the effects into WMM?

    ReplyDelete
  44. The installer works for 32-bit Windows (which was all there was when Vista first came out). The workaround was noted in a prior comment, but I'll repeat it for you:
The 32-bit installer will put the files under the wrong folder. Move everything from C:\Program Files (x86)\Movie Maker\Shared to C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared

    ReplyDelete
  45. I've updated this post with a 32-bit and a 64-bit installer. Manual copying should no longer be necessary.

    ReplyDelete
  46. can u make this effect work for windows 7?

    ReplyDelete
  47. @Joel, sorry there is no published spec by Microsoft on creating custom effects and transitions for Windows Live Movie Maker. The good news is you can install WMM6 on Windows 7 and then you can have these effects (and others). I have both on my computer and use WLMM when I want it to be simple or WMM6 when I want more features and custom transitions and effects.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I have tried for almost 3 hours to install this effect, and I have got NOWHERE! I have copied it, re-copied it, re-coded it, saved it as an .xml file, re-coded the .xml file, reinstalled it, and and re-reinstalled it, AND IT STILL WON'T APPLY THE EFFECT!

This is getting absolutely ridiculous, and I followed your instructions to a T. How in the world can I get this stupid thing to work?!?!?!?!? I have a Windows 10, and I'm running WMM 6.0 on 64-bit.

    1. First make sure that you are using the 64-bit version of WMM 6.0. It must be installed on C:\Program Files\Movie Maker. If not, please let me know the exact path you have. Next, make sure the .fx file is in the C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared folder. Make sure the .dll and .xml files are in the C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX folder. There should be no need to edit any XML; just run the installer (.msi)
