Blaine's Film Looks Effects for Windows Movie Maker

Blaine's Film Looks EffectsThe following effects can be used to give your video more of a "film look". There are 9 different film looks available. These effects work with Windows Movie Maker 6.0 (either under Vista or Windows 7).

To see a side-by-side comparison of each of the effects, check out Sample Video of Blaine's Film Look Effects

To add the Film Looks Effects to Windows Movie Maker, there are two installers depending on whether you are running WMM 6.0 on a 64-bit or 32-bit version of Windows. The installer will put the necessary files into C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared.

Windows Movie Maker 6.0:
Blaine's Film Looks (64-bit) Installer
Blaine's Film Looks (32-bit) Installer

After restarting Windows Movie Maker, you should have 9 new Film Look effects with corresponding icons:
  • Film Look - Bleach Bypass - simulates a common film printing process that results in higher contrast, lower saturation.

  • Film Look - Contrast - a higher contrast film look.

  • Film Look - Desaturation - a lower saturation film look.

  • Film Look - Enhance Colors - 6 color profile enhancements.

  • *Note: These transitions require the architecture of WMM 6.0 and can't be made to work on versions 2.6 or earlier.

    1. How do I install these on Windows 7?

I tried running the installer but nothing appeared in Movie Maker.

I also tried moving the files from C:\Program Files (x86)\Movie Maker\Shared

      To C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Photo Gallery\Shared

Which is where Movie Maker is actually installed, but that didn't work either.

    2. @OMG, these effects are for Windows Movie Maker 6, not Windows Live Movie Maker 2011. If you want to install WMM6, check my prior post on the topic. Also, you have a 64-bit version of Windows, so after you install WMM6 (the 64-bit version), be sure to use the 64-bit installer for these effects.

      1. Blaine you have been so helpful to so many strangers on the internets. I don't know why you do it but I've benefited so much from your work.

    3. Hello!
I have downloaded the 64-bit installer for my computer that has Windows 7, and I can't seem to be able to get the effects onto my WMM 6.0. Do you know what I might be doing wrong?
      Thanks :)

    4. Did you install a 64-bit version of WMM 6.0? Is it in C:\Program Files\Movie Maker or not?

    5. Yeah, I just checked and it's in there. I even downloaded Rehan's ShaderTFX (64-bit)and Direct X, but I'm at a loss.

      ReplyDelete
    6. So the first question is are the transitions and effects in Rehan's ShaderTFX working as expected? You need that working first before mine will work.

      ReplyDelete
    7. Yep! Rehan's ShaderTFX is in there and they work fine. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but it was worth a shot.

    8. What happens when you run my installer?
Do you see 'Blaine's Film Looks' in your list of installed programs?
Do you see the appropriate files in C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX?
Do you see the icons in the list of effects?
      Do they work on images?
Do they work on WMV files?

    9. Hi I tried downloading the 32-bit installer
but its taking really long.. is that normal?

(my cp is vista) and I dont know what type of WMM is mine..

    10. @Cessy, this will only work on WMM 6.0. Run Windows Movie Maker and then go to Help > About WMM. Look at the bottom (not the top) to find out your version number.

It should not take long to download. Try saving it to your computer. Then try running it. Also, you might already have it installed so if you need to, go to the Control Panel and uninstall, then reinstall.

    13. @jackson, more details please. Which version of Windows do you have? What about the version of Windows Movie Maker? What do you see in C:\Program Files\Movie Maker? What do you see in C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\AddOnTFX?

    14. I've also downloaded MM6 (thank you so much for this!!!) and it works great, so far. However, I cannot get the effects to show up. I've copied them from the program files(x86) to the program file, into the shared folder of movie maker, and they still do not show up. I am using Windows 7, MM6. I've rebooted, uninstalled and reinstalled and still stuck. Any assistance is welcomed. Thanks!

    15. I moved the files around in the share folder and it now works. Thanks!

    17. If you have a 64-bit version of Windows you should have installed a 64-bit version of WMM 6.0. Since you have mismatched the version, WMM is in the wrong folder (x86). As noted above, the installer will put the necessary files into C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared but if you have the mismatched version, you'll have manually move everything to the same place under (x86).

To prevent future problems, I would install the matching version of WMM 6.0 since that's what all my installers expect.

    18. I installed the effects but when I add them to my clips my clips turn completely black. What should I do ? the clip plays and I hear the sound from the video but it's all black.

      1. Does it work on a picture? If yes, I would check the format of your clip. Perhaps try converting it to .wmv format. Also, does it perhaps still work if you publish your movie to the PC?

    19. I also tried the clip but an error message comes up saying ''Windows movie maker cannot publish the movie to the specified location, that the publishing location is still available, that there is enough free disk space available, and then try again.'' I don't understand what that means

      1. Can you publish your movie if the effect is not applied? If you can't save at all then try converting the clip to .wmv using Freemake Video Converter. Also check that you have the latest driver for your graphics cars.

    20. I have converted the video to .wmv and also updated my video card and it still shows up all black after applying any film look effect.

      1. Hmm... can you run dxdiag and go to the Display tab. What is the make/model of your video card? And what is its DirectX level?

    21. To all of you that have problems on installing these files. Download LessMsi, extract the files in the msi-file you downloaded. Then put them in the folders they should be in manually. That worked fine for me, both for this pack and the letterbox-pack. :)

    22. Would it work on WMM 2012 ? thanks

      1. Nope, Microsoft didn't provide a published way to add to Movie Maker 2012. The architectures are very different.

    23. I have WMM 6, on a 64 bit computer. I download the 64 bit version, and instead of installing it, my computer begins to install it, gives me a loading box that says it's 'gathering information', but then nothing else happens - the box closes and no effect have been installed. My WMM is closed, as well, during this time. I tried running the program LessMsi, but the program couldn't even recognize your files, it kept giving me an error.

    24. Hi there! The links won't work. I was trying to download the 64-bit one, but then it said 'file not found'. Any ideas what's going on? Or if you can update the file location?

      1. It looks like my ISP accidentally deleted some of the stored files. I'm looking into it and should have them reloaded within the hour.
